Assessment of Needs for National Native American Heritage Month Presentation:
  • What do you know?
There is a need to help people understand the nature of the Native American culture by providing awareness material that is culturally and historically correct.
  • What do you want to know?
I want to know if the existence of the National Native American Heritage Month on November and the reasons for its inception are known to high school age students. I want to know if providing a culturally correct example of a Native American legend (connect type activity) will successfully and positively raise this awareness.
  • What are you trying to measure, determine, or define?
I am trying to measure whether this kind of connect type activity will help participants connect to Native American spirituality by connecting with religious and spiritual experiences in their own life. It is my hope that this activity will heighten awareness to other Native American issues.
  • How will you collect and record information.
I will have participating students write a short essay reflecting main points provided in the exercise. I will analyze the essays to provide a results report to the head of the school Social Studies Department. I will also provide students with a brief survey on the presentation subject and material to gather participant feedback.
  • How will you report the information you collect?
The information is an awareness exercise for National Native American Heritage Month and will be reported to the school Social Studies department who will determine the merit of reuse.
  • Are all interested groups included in planning and conducting the needs assessment?
Yes, a previous meeting was held when seeking support approval from school administration (Head of Social Studies Department). Permission was granted to produce this short presentation. Students previously indicated a real interest in learning more on the subject.
